The analysis is dialectical in nature, examining the dynamic interrelationships between various parts of the psyche and the analytic relationship. Behaviors, unconscious motives, and traumatic experiences are analyzed in the context of current events and their significance in shaping the potential course of future events. A human being not only acts in the external world but also leads an inner life, rich in symbols and rooted in deeper meaning and significance.
Manifestations of symbolic life include dreams, slips of the tongue, unconscious motives for actions, and projections onto objects and subjects, as well as boundary, transcultural, or numinous experiences. Analysis deals with the manifestations of psychological life, since our actions stem not only from past traumas but are also motivated by the need to integrate them and the striving to achieve psychological wholeness. Jung called this process individuation; to frame it in the terms of depth psychology, the mystery of coniunctio—the central mystery of the alchemical process—aims at the synthesis of opposites, the assimilation of blackness, and the integration of the devil.
